Sam Querrey became the first American to win the Mexican Open with a straight sets win over Rafael Nadal.

Sam Querrey has stunned Rafael Nadal 6-3 7-6(3) to win the Mexican Open.

Nadal was the heavy favourite going in to the finals, having won 14 straight matches in Acapulco and 28 straight sets. However, Querrey had been in impressive form all week, taking wins against David Goffin, Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios en route to the final.

The first set was an even affair until Querrey went on an 11 point win streak with the match tied at 3-3. Serving big, and playing some breathtaking groundstrokes, the American was able to close out the set 6-3 – the first time Nadal has lost a set in Acapulco.

Nadal came out swinging in the second, and repeatedly came close to breaking. However, the American’s serve rescued him on numerous occasions and he was able to force the breaker. This time it was Querrey’s turn to attack Nadal’s serve. The American, playing some fearless groundstrokes, was able to take a decisive ‘mini-break’ at 3-3 and didn’t look back. Closing the match out on his first match point, he was able to celebrate his first ATP title since Delray Beach in 2016.
