Serena Williams will not be encouraging her children to play tennis. The 22-time Major winner, who turned 35 on Monday, said that she would worry about the stigma of having such a successful mum.
“I wouldn’t put them [my children] in tennis,” Serena said at the opening of Patrick Mouratoglou’s new academy. “I wouldn’t stop them if they wanted to play tennis, but I wouldn’t encourage tennis.
“I wouldn’t want the stigma of mummy Serena, I think that would be a lot of pressure and I would like for them to do their own thing and have their own name and be the best at whatever they wanted to do.”
Serena also took a moment to reflect on the injury problems that have plagued her since winning Wimbledon in July. The former world No.1, who lost to Elina Svitolina at the Rio Olympics and Karolina Pliskova at the US Open, confirmed that she has been playing with injuries for the past couple of months.
“I have been dealing with a lot of health issues since Wimbledon, that has been really frustrating, I told Venus that it ‘ruined my Olympics’!”, Serena sighed.
Serena announced last week that she will be missing the Asia swing of the WTA, and is aiming to return for the WTA Championships in Singapore.
