As the doubles duos traded exquisite blows, Lopez was the first to crack, handing the Romanians a 4-3 advantage. However, it’s not a break until you hold, and the Spanish duo broke back immediately, before Rafa secured a 5-4 advantage.

With Horia Tecau serving to keep the Romanians in the match, the Nadal and Lopez went on the attack. Tecau saved two match points, before he cracked on the third handing victory to the ecstatic Spanish duo.

“It was an amazing experience, especially doing that with one of my best friends, with Marc, it’s something unforgettable for me, for both of us, I think,” beamed Rafa after the match.

“Win a gold medal today after two months and a half with no practice, with no preparation at all, just working on the gym, is something that is a dream, no? The moment was unbelievable, and we had fun. We fight hard. The only thing that we can say is that we are very, very happy.”
