Juan Martin del Potro got stuck in a lift for 40 minutes the morning of his blockbuster first-round singles match against No.1 seed Novak Djokovic.

The Argentine was in his hotel in the Athletes Village and was on his way to prepare for the match when he got trapped.

There was reportedly no mobile signal in the elevator, forcing del Potro to yell for help – cries that were eventually heard by fellow Argentineans in the country’s handball team.

They apparently forced the doors open to rescue him.

Del Potro did get to the Olympic Tennis Centre in time, and his performance has not seemed affected – he has taken the opening set against Djokovic.
