Friday Five: worst tennis interviews ever

“Were you surprised that Azarenka was pregnant? And did you even know that she had someone to be pregnant with?”

This question was actually asked of Eugenie Bouchard earlier this week in Washington DC.

It related to the recent announcement on Facebook by world No.6 Victoria Azarenka that she was pregnant and was expecting a child with her boyfriend at the end of the year.

It prompted a disbelieving laugh from Bouchard, as well as the entire press room. As it should have.

Bouchard sportingly answered the question, which was then followed up with – by the same reporter – a question about the feud between Taylor Swift and Kanye West/Kim Kardashian. Hard-hitting stuff.

We thought this was one of the worst questions we’ve heard a tennis player asked in a media appearance.

So that, and four more, make up today’s Friday Five …

Caroline Wozniacki is asked about Rory McIlroy, the man who suddenly ended their engagement

McIlroy broke up with Wozniacki in May 2014. Just over a year later at Wimbledon, a reporter asked if Wozniacki had a message for McIlroy after the superstar golfer sustained an injury. Caroline’s look said it all.

After losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon, Tomas Berdych is asked how he’s feeling about his game heading into the quarterfinals …

Understandably, Tomas was not amused.

Simona Halep is asked about her breast reduction surgery – and how it helps her “outside the tennis”

Obviously, this – something that happened several years ago – is the reporter’s business. So it makes sense to focus on that, instead of on what was then Halep’s best ever run at a Grand Slam tournament.

What do you look for in a guy, Maria?

Two former world No.1s and Grand Slam champions together, having a chat, on court. At a Grand Slam tournament. Jim Courier, the interviewer, asked Maria Sharapova, the victor, what she looks for in a guy. “Like, where are we?” Sharapova says incredulously slightly out of shot of the microphone. Readers’ project: find us vision of a male tennis player being asked in an interview what he looks for in a woman …
