ATP Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship - Day Six

Marcos Baghdatis has beaten fourth seed Tomas Berdych 7-6(3) 7-6(4) in the first round of the Gerry Weber Open, taking a measure of revenge for his loss in the 2007 final.

Baghdatis kissed the grass after his victory, his first over the Czech world No.8 since 2010.

Berdych had two break points to put himself in position to serve for the second set but squandered both of them. Berdych was undone by his 47 unforced errors.

Rising prospect Alexander Zverev beat seventh-seeded Viktor Troicki 6-4 6-4 to reach the second round.

Zverev made fewer errors and was the steadier player as Troicki managed to convert only one of six break points. Zverev took all three he had.

American teenager Taylor Fritz went out against Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita despite firing 15 aces. The match was halted by rain on Monday in the tiebreaker and Sugita completed a 7-6(4) 2-6 6-3 win.

Florian Mayer of Germany had 11 aces in beating Brian Baker of the US 7-5 7-6(3) and Ivo Karlovic pounded 26 aces to move past Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia 7-6(6) 6-3.

Top seed Roger Federer begins his campaign tomorrow.
