Two of Maria Sharapova’s biggest sponsors, Nike and Head, have come out in support of the star despite her two-year suspension for failing a drug test.
Sportswear giant Nike said in a statement on Wednesday: “The ITF Tribunal has found that Maria did not intentionally break its rules.
“Maria has always made her position clear, has apologised for her mistake and is now appealing the length of the ban.
“Based on the decision of the ITF and their factual findings, we hope to see Maria back on court and will continue to partner with her.”
Meanwhile, racquet sponsor Head, came out with a robust defence of the Russian. “We believe, based on the facts and circumstances provided to us, that this is a flawed decision. HEAD will continue to stand by Miss Sharapova,” John Eliasch said.
Sharapova was punished by a three-person Tennis Anti-Doping Program tribunal appointed by the International Tennis Federation, which concluded she took meldonium “for the purpose of enhancing her performance.”
The Russian tested positive at the Australian Open on 26 January, and said later she didn’t know the substance was newly banned.
In March, when Sharapova announced she failed a drug test, Nike said it had suspended the relationship while the investigation continues.
