Former world No.2 Tommy Haas has been announced as the new tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open.
Known as Indian Wells, the tournament is one of the biggest events on the ATP World Tour and WTA Tour calendars.
The German is a four-time Grand Slam semifinalist and won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. The 38-year-old is still an active player, but is currently sidelined following toe surgery and is hoping to return to the tour in 2017.
“I’m thrilled to join the BNP Paribas Open as its new tournament director and look forward to working with one of the finest sporting events in the world,” Haas said.
World No.1 Novak Djokovic endorsed the decision following his semifinal win at Roland Garros.
“It’s a perfect solution for the Indian Wells tournament,” he said.
Haas replaces Raymond Moore, who stepped down in March after making controversial comments on equal prize money and women’s tennis.
The appointment is still pending approval from ATP and WTA boards.
