It has been an unusual Roland Garros. Before the tournament had even begun, it was rocked by the withdrawal of Roger Federer. Then there were so early upsets, Rafa’s shock withdrawal and of course the rain, and lots of it. Finally on day 13 there was a sense of normality as the big names booked final berths…
Serena, Muguruza set final showdown
Unexpected runs from Kiki Bertens and Sam Stosur have dominated headlines in recent days, and rightly so. But neither could continue the fairytale when they faced top seeds in the semifinals.
Muguruza earnt the first finals spot with a comfortable 6-2 6-4 victory over Stosur. The fourth-seeded Spaniard dictated the match with her powerful game, setting up an opportunity to win a maiden Grand Slam title.
World No.1 Serena Williams stands in her way through. The defending champion was tested by Bertens, saving set points in a tense first set before clinching a 7-6(7) 6-4 win.

The women’s singles final headlines the action on Day 13 – and Muguruza is ready for the challenge of denying Serena an Open Era record-equaling 22nd Grand Slam.
“I’ll have nothing to lose, so I will try and win against the best tennis player in the world. That’s all. I’ll try and control my emotions, and I hope I can win this title. Why not?,” she said.
It’s Novak v Andy, again
For a seventh time in their career, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will go head-to-head in a Grand Slam final.
Murray became the first Brit to reach a final at Roland Garros in the Open Era with a 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 win over defending champion Stan Wawrinka.
Wawrinka conceded he had no answer for the in-form world No.2.
“I think that Andy played really so well today. He was the strongest on the court. It’s as simple as that,” Wawrinka said.
Djokovic qualified for his fourth final on Parisian clay with an emphatic 6-2 6-1 6-4 defeat of Austrian Dominic Thiem.
The Serb is now one win away from completing a career Grand Slam.
Hingis and Paes are the champions
Speaking of career Grand Slams, Martina Hingis and Leander Paes have become just the sixth mixed doubles team ever to complete one.
The duo won the French Open title with a 4-6 6-4 10-8 victory over Sania Mirza and Ivan Dodig.
