Mutua Madrid Open - Day Four

Czech Radek Stepanek was among the round one winners as qualifying kicked off at Roland Garros.

The 37-year-old defeated German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 6-4 6-4 in is his first qualifying appearance at Roland Garros in 14 years.

“If I didn’t love it I wouldn’t be here,” said the former world No.8. “These young guys, that’s a challenge for me. It’s three generations of players I’m meeting on the courts, and I’m still able to beat them, which is giving me confidence.

“There were times when it didn’t look good with my comeback but I was fighting to the end. Now I’m fit again, and I’m enjoying every minute of my tennis.”

He next faces Australian wildcard Matthew Barton.

Top-seeded Russian Konstantin Kravchuk was a shock loser on day one, beaten in three sets by Frenchman David Guez 4-6 6-3 6-4.

Qualifying continues on day two with the start of women’s singles qualifying and the completion of men’s round one matches.
