Today’s ATP World Tour is blessed with many players possessing abundant talent combined with mercurial temperament to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

One week, they’re storming deep into a big tournament and beating the world’s best. The next? They can’t get out of their own way, put a ball in the court, or manage to navigate their first-round match. They’re raging against the umpire, or themselves. They’re bothered by the conditions, or their opponent, or their racquet, or something in the crowd, or whatever else is applicable in the moment.

Many fans and pundits simply dismiss these players as talents unfulfilled. But here at tennismash, we embrace them – these tortured geniuses make the sport a richer, more entertaining place.

Here’s five of our favourites:

Fabio Fognini

Ernests Gulbis

Jerzy Janowicz

Benoit Paire

Grigor Dimitrov
