Rising Australian tennis star Daria Gavrilova is into the second round of the WTA Tour event in Charleston.
The 22-year-old was pushed to three-sets by world No.86 Zarina Diyas, but prevailed 6-1 1-6 6-3.
The Kazahk player had defeated Gavrilova in straight sets in the Miami Open second round two weeks earlier.
Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko continued her good form, upsetting 16th seed Misaki Doi of Japan 4-6 6-3 6-1.
Other opening round winners included 15th seed Sabine Lisicki and 11th seed Kristina Mladenovic.
Defending champion Angelique Kerber and 2010 champion Sam Stosur begin their campaigns tomorrow.
