The top women’s seeds continue to tumble at the Miami Open with fifth-seed Simona Halep the latest to fall victim to Timea Bacsinszky’s giant-killing run.
A day after eliminating third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, Bacsinszky beat Halep 4-6 6-3 6-2 to move through to the semifinals.
The Swiss world No.20 will face 15th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova or 30th-seeded Ekaterina Makarova in the last four.
Bacsinszky broke Halep for a 3-1 lead in the second set, then got two quick breaks for a 3-0 lead in the third and kept command the rest of the way.
The highest four women’s seeds in the top half of the draw – No.1 Serena Williams, Radwanska, Halep and eighth seed Petra Kvitova – have all been eliminated from the hardcourt tournament.
