Grigor Dimitrov has sprung the latest upset in the men’s draw of the Miami Open, ousting second seed Andy Murray in three sets on Monday.

Dimitrov, seeded 26th, recovered from 3-1 down in the final set to record a 6-7(1) 6-4 6-3 victory.

It is the Bulgarian’s second victory over the Brit; the first came in sensational circumstances when he upset Murray in the Wimbledon quarterfinals of 2014, the year Murray was the defending champion.

Until Monday in Miami, Murray lead the head-to-head 6-1.

And he looked headed for a seventh victory when he broke early in the third set.

Yet Dimitrov reeled off fight straight games – and benefited from more than 50 unforced errors from Murray – to seal victory.

The men’s draw at the prestigious hardcourt event is now wide open; although No.1 seed Novak Djokovic survives, Murray, No.3 seed Roger Federer, fourth seed Stan Wawrinka and No.5 seed Rafael Nadal have all exited, as has eighth seed David Ferrer.

The next highest remaining seed is Japan’s Kei Nishikori, at No.6; Nishikori saw off seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2 6-2 on Monday to reach the fourth round.

Dimitrov will next face the winner of the match between Gael Monfils and Pablo Cuevas.
