Juan Martin del Potro has set up a mouthwatering second-round clash with Roger Federer at the Miami Open.

The Argentine, currently the world No.366 and using a protected ranking to enter the draw, beat compatriot Guido Pella 6-0 7-6(4) on Stadium 1 at Crandon Park on Wednesday night.

The win means he will face third seed Federer, the player he so famously dethroned in the 2009 US Open final to announce his arrival as a major star.

His career has since been beset by wrist injuries, which have required four surgeries.

Federer leads the career head-to-head 15-5, including their last meeting – a thrilling three-set victory back at the 2013 World Tour Finals in London.
