American qualifier Ryan Harrison has upset 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic to progress to the second round in Acapulco.

Harrison beat the No.3 seed 6-3 3-6 6-2 to set up a meeting with Ukrainian Illya Marchenko.

The world No.127 has a history over performing strongly at the Mexican hardcourt event, last year advancing to the semifinals – also as a qualifier.

Harrison, 23, is a former world No.43, a mark he reached back in 2012.

Also progressing at the ATP 500 event were top seed David Ferrer, No.4 seed Dominic Thiem and fifth seed Bernard Tomic.

No.8 seed Jeremy Chardy fell victim to another young American, in the form of 18-year-old Taylor Fritz.
