After almost a year out of the game, Juan Martin del Potro makes his return to tennis this week at the ATP event in Delray Beach.

The popular Argentine will face Denis Kudla in the opening round of the ATP 250 hardcourt tournament in Florida, one he won back in 2011.

He is a wildcard entry into the tournament, ranked outside the top 1,000.

Del Potro has struggled with chronic wrist injuries – both left and right – necessitating surgery on three occasions. Since winning the US Open in 2009, he has missed nearly three entire years of competition, sidelined for much of 2010, 2014 and 2015.

His last competitive appearance was a first round loss in Miami in March 2015, one of just two tournaments he contested last season.

He was ranked inside the top five as recently as 2014.
