Lleyton Hewitt fans in Australia and around the world will have the chance to farewell the former world No.1 and two-time Grand Slam champion as he plays his final tournaments as a professional competitor.
Hewitt’s farewell tour commenced in Hobart before Christmas, where he and Sam Groth entertained a packed crowd at the picturesque Domain Tennis Centre, and continues tonight at the Hopman Cup in Perth.
This year marks Hewitt’s eighth appearance representing Australia at the prestigious mixed team event and he believes it’s the perfect preparation for his 20th, and final, Australian Open.
“I’ve always loved playing the Hopman Cup, I love playing for my country,” Hewitt said. “Plus, for my last Australian Open I think it’s great preparation. I’m guaranteed the three matches but hopefully four if we can make the final.”
Fans in Adelaide will also get the chance to farewell their hometown hero following the announcement today that Hewitt will join Team Philippoussis in the World Tennis Challenge on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 January.
“I’m really pleased to be able to head back to Adelaide – obviously Memorial Drive is a special place for me and it’s fitting that the place it all started will be the last venue I play before my final Australian Open tournament and retire from the pro-circuit,” Lleyton Hewitt said today.
Fans are encouraged to tweet their fond farewell messages to Hewitt using the hashtag #HewBeauty.
The tweets will be drawn into a series of digital mosaics celebrating key moments in Hewitt’s stellar career. The more tweets received, the more images will be unlocked.
Fans can search for their messages within the mosaics and share on their own Facebook and Twitter accounts, with no limit to the number of messages they can send.
